My grandparents(mother side) came from New Albany, Mississippi in January 1955. They left their to reside in Niagara Falls, NY for gainful employment and prosperity. In the South, during that time it wasn't too many opportunities for African Americans to have a good job. The best jobs available was to pick cotton or to clean at a affluent home. When my grandparents first arrived to Niagara Falls, NY it wasn't glamorous whatsoever. Back then when people migrated from the South to the North they would stay in rooming houses. In other words, you would have a building that have 4bdrms. A family would have to pay for one room every week in order to stay there. Families in rooming houses would have to share a kitchen, living room and a bathroom. It wasn't a pleasant experience to say the least. For entertainment my grandparents would talk amongst the families there and listen to the radio. If they wanted to communicate they would write letters to family members back home. Eventually, my grandparents were able to find stable employment. My grandmother was a CNA and grandfather was a garbage man.

On my father side of the family they originated from the state of Virginia. Through research of family history and past family reunions I've found out that not only I am from African American descendant. I also have Irish and Alaskan Indian descendant as well. This was very inspiring to find out that I came from such a multicultural background.
